Chapter 11- Loren Johnson, Chris' grandfather, is very much like Chris. He is the reason that love of the outdoors runs in the family. He was a hunter and a hunting guide and he never stayed in one place.Even at an older age, he still enjoys adventure. Krakauer explains how Loren was a hunter but also hated to kill animals. He would often cry after he made a kill, but he knew that it had to be done for him to survive. Obviously, Chris identified with his grandfather and they became very close.

Chapter 12- Chris finds out that after he was born, his dad continued to have a relationship with his previous wife. Needless to say, Chris feels angry at his father, especially since he had another child, Quinn, with his previous wife even after Chris was born. This is probably a huge motivating factor for Chris to get up an leave one day and hurt his parents like he did.

Chapter 13- Carine McCandless, Chris' sister, is much like Chris in her high intellectual abilities and also in some of her philosophies. Both her and her brother shared a distaste for their parents. For Carine, the distaste was a result of her parents both working too much and not having enough time to spend with the family. Eventually though she did make peace with the two of them, unlike Chris. Ironically, Carine describes how she actually now finds herself becoming a bit of a workaholic, the same thing she used to dislike her parents for. Carine also describes how badly Chris' death is effecting her even after a whole year after the incident.

Chapter 14- Krakauer is featured in this chapter, and he makes many comparisons between Chris and himself. Krakauer, before becoming a writer, was also a thrill seeker and adventurer. He describes the time when he decided to climb "Devils Thumb" to prove himself to both his overbearing father and himself. No one had ever climbed to the top of Devils Thumb alone, which is why Krakauer decides that it is a great enough challenge for him. In his desire to conquer and survive in the wild, Krakauer connects with Chris. He almost makes it, but he decides its too dangerous and has to head back down.

Chapter 15- Again, Krakauer's bout against nature is featured. He tries to climb up the mountain several times, but does not make it. Finally, he decides to try to climb a different side of the mountain, normally a more dangerous and difficult climb. After a few near death slips, he does eventually make it to the summit. He feels incredible and takes a few pictures and heads back down. At a bar he tells his story to the patrons, but they are unimpressed. He feels defeated, and again makes another comparison to Chris. He thinks that his climb and experience did not change his life as he thought it would, and is disappointed. He compares this feeling to how Chris must have felt in his final days, where he knew he was going to die of starvation, with no one beside him.
